Is electric better off-road than gas?

Shift towards off-roading electric vehicles and explore the difference you can make on the environment while still enjoying the outdoors.

The days of clunky, slow and unattractive electric vehicles (EVs) are over. With the goal of phasing out gas vehicles, tightening pollution regulations and reducing gas vehicles by 50%, more and more car companies are adopting EVs across their entire lineup.

How are EVs beginning to enter the off-roading category, we compare the pros and cons of gas and electric vehicles.

Benefits of an off-road EV

While you may not think “practical” when you imagine an off-road vehicle, the tides are quickly turning to include EVs in the off-roading-capable category. With an EV, you often get efficient gas mileage, full power and instant torque and four-wheel drive that can satisfy any off-roader.

As technology advances, even the typical four-wheel drive is becoming obsolete. Today’s high-end EVs can incorporate battery power for each wheel. With this level of power you can reach peak torque at 0 rpm as each motor powers a wheel.

Compared to a petrol vehicle, an EV is fuel efficient and provides incredible power and torque right off the bat. Instead of waiting for a combustion engine to kick-start your torque, an EV gets to work right away. Their drivetrains power a smooth and efficient torque delivery system that gas-powered vehicles simply can’t.

For example, in the event of getting stuck in the mud, instant torque is a major leg up to clearing the obstacle because each wheel is able to work independently .

There are also fewer components at-risk of breaking in an EV when you’re riding off road. Powering over rocky terrain or rolling through wetlands can bring even more excitement when there are fewer parts that could fail. With fewer parts and zero risk of flooding the engine, an EV allows you to de-stress as you take on just about any outdoor adventure.

An added bonus of an EV: a silent engine. When you’re powering through the landscape toward your camping destination, you won’t be the loud, rumbling engine that scares off wildlife. And if you’re the first to head out in the morning, you won’t risk waking up the entire camp.

The biggest downside of the off-roading market in 2021, however, is that there are few options for electric off-roading vehicles. But, in the near future, alternative cars, trucks and SUVs will become the majority on the trails and beyond.

The verdict: We vote yes

EVs are not only better off-road vehicles, but enhance the experience of exploring the great outdoors even more. What gas-powered vehicles lack, EVs are able to not only compensate but elevate as well. From advanced four-wheel control, instant torque and confident off-roading capabilities, the future of off-road EVs is bright.
